“Great Bookends feature”

Big Jim gives his weekly preview and tips for Week 11 of the 2017 NFL Season…read more

To very interesting games to start and finish this week. Titans, Steelers, Falcons and the Seahawks all need this win. The four of these sides all started the year as favorites to win their respective Divisions but now all face serious challenges to even make the playoffs. Its all a matter of consistency and these four teams have mixed their form up all year. All won last week (but with the exception of Atlanta) were all very lucky.

Strange week with plenty of home teams getting the plus. I’m also taking quite a few more OVER bets than I usually do in the Total Points Scored markets so let’s hope for plenty of TD’s.

Let’s get underway:

Thursday Night Football

Titans @ Steelers

A short turn around for two teams that won last week but didn’t do it in impressive style. Two QB’s face off at different stages in their career but have both faced their demons this year. Should be one hell of a game and might come down to Leveon Bell and how the Titans inside D can cope with his skipping around.

Big Jim Handicap: -4/44.5

Ladbrokes Market: -6.5/43

Suggested Bets:

2 Unit Bet Titans +6.5 at the line

2 Unit Bet Total Points Scored OVER 43

Sunday Early Games

Lions @ Bears

Speaking of average performances both of these two were pretty average last week as well. This is the kind of game where the Bears will BRING it but the Lions just have to win this to keep pace with the Vikings. Big game and its time for the Lions to put in a four-quarter performance. Always get scared of backing home dogs in divisional match-ups.

Big Jim Handicap: +7/43.5

Ladbrokes Market: +3/41

Suggested Bets:

3 Unit Bet Lions -3 at the line

2 Unit Bet Total Points Scored OVER 41

Jaguars @ Browns

Browns were a little better last week but they are coming up against a Jags team that should be high on confidence. The Jags have to Bortles into the game and this is their opportunity.

Big Jim Handicap: +7/43.5

Ladbrokes Market: +7.5/38

Suggested Bets:

1 Unit Bet Browns +7.5 at the line

3 Unit Bet Total Points Scored OVER 38

Ravens @ Packers

Interesting game this one. The Packers were pretty good last week whilst the Ravens enjoyed a week off. This is a must-win game if either of these teams wants to make the playoffs. You can go insane putting your trust in the Ravens but if they can’t win this then they should put the cleats away for the year.

Big Jim Handicap: +3/41.5

Ladbrokes Market: +1.5/38.5

Suggested Bets:

2 Unit Bet Ravens -1.5 at the line

2 Unit Bet Total Points Scored OVER 38.5

Cardinals @ Texans

Two teams that had high hopes in 2017 but now face a tough end to the year after their hopes of post regular action is now over. Pretty keen on the Cardinals today who really should have beaten the Seahawks last start. They also have the advantage of a long week to get things right.

Big Jim Handicap: +3/42.5

Ladbrokes Market: +1/not available

Suggested Bets:

2 Unit Bet Cardinals -1 at the line

NO Bet Total Points Scored

Buccaneers @ Dolphins

AAAHHHHHH. The Bucs were better last week. Dolphins just have to get the ball to Landry. Not sure what is happening to Winston. These are really hard to work out this one so I don’t mind that there aren’t any lines available.

Big Jim Handicap: -3/40.5

Rams @ Vikings

This is a blockbuster and its one that not many of us saw coming. Both of these sides are on fire at the moment. The winner here takes a big step towards winning their Division. I really like the Rams and think they can keep this good form going. Huge game but think the market is right on the mark so maybe just one to enjoy more than being a great betting game.

Big Jim Handicap: -2.5/45

Ladbrokes Market: -2.5/46.5

Suggested Bets:

NO Bet at the line

1 Unit Bet Total Points Scored UNDER 46.5

Chiefs @ Giants

Chiefs have had two weeks to get their heads back in the game. They needed it as they have had a mid-season mini crisis. The Giants are going to come out and actually compete sooner or later. I suspect Andy Reid is smart enough to get the win but +10 is a big start for the G-Men at home no matter how bad they are going.

Big Jim Handicap: +7/42.5

Ladbrokes Market: +10/44

Suggested Bets:

2 Unit Bet Giants +10 at the line

2 Unit Bet Total Points Scored UNDER 44

Redskins @ Saints

Redskins are another team that leaves you scratching your head. They just do too many stupid things. Saints are on a massive high and winning form is good form and I can’t see that changing today. Margin the only issue as the Redskins have shown they can bring their D on the road this year.

Big Jim Handicap: -8/46.5

Ladbrokes Market: -7.5/51

Suggested Bets:

NO Bet at the line

2 Unit Bet Total Points Scored UNDER 51

Sunday late Games

Bills @ Chargers

This is a dream chance for the Chargers to bounce back. The Bills have been dismantled in their last two games after their heroics earlier in the season. Just feel this Chargers defense is going to make it hard for the Bills to bounce back in the California sun. No markets to go on at the moment but failing massive injuries I lean towards the Chargers in a fairly low scoring one.

Big Jim Handicap: -7/42.5

Ladbrokes Market: NO LINE AVAILABLE at time of posting

Suggested Bets:

### Unit Bet ### at the line

### Unit Bet Total Points Scored ###

Bengals @ Broncos

I couldn’t have less interest in a game of football in regards to the who wins but not a bad betting proposition. These are two sides that have a myriad of problems. I actually think the Broncos have a chance in this one, so that should tell you how much I rate the Bengals.

Big Jim Handicap: -3.5/38.5

Ladbrokes Market: -2.5/40

Suggested Bets:

2 Unit Bet Broncos -2.5 at the line

2 Unit Bet Total Points Scored UNDER 40

Patriots @ Raiders

This is going to be a humdinger. Del Rio will have used the week off to create a “let’s start the season again” approach to this one. If the Raiders can win this one they are back in the hunt. They had a great come from behind win in Mexico last year and they will go into this one full of confidence. It’s dangerous going against the Pats but I am going to go for the Raider Nation because their preparation should be so much better than the travel weary Pats. +7 looks juicy!!!

Big Jim Handicap: +2.5/50.5

Ladbrokes Market: 7/53.5

Suggested Bets:

3 Unit Bet Raiders +7 at the line

2 Unit Bet Total Points Scored UNDER 53.5

Sunday Night Football

Eagles @ Cowboys

Giddy Up!!! The Eagles get their chance tonight to put their stamp on the NFC East. Win tonight and the Division should be theirs. Cowboys are still facing a Zeke-less existence and they also have to deal with having their pants pulled down in Georgia last week. I think this will be fairly close but the Eagles should win this as long as they don’t turn the ball over. Can’t see this being high scoring even in perfect conditions as both will be happy with a grind it out a win on prime time.

Big Jim Handicap: +3.5/43.5

Ladbrokes Market: +3/48.5

Suggested Bets:

2 Unit Bet Eagles -3 at the line

3 Unit Bet Total Points Scored UNDER 48.5

Monday Night Football

Falcons @ Seahawks

Falcons for me. I’m not suggesting the Falcons have fixed their problems yet but they look better against the Cowboys. The Seahawks defense has some big cracks and their offense is still hit and miss at best. As long as Wilson doesn’t have a blinder the Falcons will have too much scoring power in Seattle. They will also want to atone for what happened here last year with their shattering Julio Jones “no flag” call.

Big Jim Handicap: +4.5/46.5

Ladbrokes Market: -3/46

Suggested Bets:

3 Unit Bet Falcons +3 at the line

“Falcons or Panthers to chase down the Saints?”

Big Jim gives his weekly preview and tips for Week 9 of the 2017 NFL Season…read more

Plenty of clutch games this week in the NFL which makes for an exciting week. Two big NFC South Divisional match-ups head the line up early on before an absolute crunch matchup between the Chiefs who travel to Dallas to take on the Cowboys. The Sunday and Monday Night games might not be the best games on paper but both are crucial encounters that I am actually really excited about both.

We had another winning week here at www.bigjimwins.com last weekend but it was hard work. We lost a host of bets late in the last quarter which stopped us having a huge winning week. The positive sign is that we are still well up for the year and we keep posting winning numbers even though we can’t take a trick in the close ones. Maybe this will be the week where we post some REALLY huge numbers.

Let’s get underway:

Thursday Night Football

Bills @ Jets

A win here for the Bills would take them to 6:2. Who would have thought that could have happened this year? A new coach with a basic no mistake game plan and some underrated stars in key positions have turned this dream into a reality. All they have to do tonight is grind this one out. The Jets will lift early but if the Bills can stay solid, tackle hard and not turn over the ball they will win this game. They have done exactly that all year so why change now. Bills in a low scoring game for me.

Big Jim Handicap: +5.5/41

Ladbrokes Market: 3/42.5

Suggested Bets:

3 Unit Bet on Bills -3 at the line

1 Unit Bet Total Points Scored UNDER 42.5

Sunday Early Games

Colts @ Texans

This game comes at a good time for the Texans. They will be tired after last week but have to lift at home here today. At least the Colts are going to be carrying similar mental scars from their late 4th quarter loss to the Bengals as well. This Texan side will be very very good in the future but if they want to keep this year alive then they have to win this one and claw themselves back to 4:4. The Texans are the best team in football at the moment with a losing record.

Big Jim Handicap: -10/45

Ladbrokes Market: -13.5/53

Suggested Bets:

1 Unit Bet on Colts +13.5 at the line

3 Unit Bet Total Points Scored UNDER 53

Bengals @ Jaguars

Ok Jags time to stand up!!! If the Jags are the real deal then they win this football game. Even if they are only average they SHOULD win this football game regardless. Two weeks to prepare for this one should see the Jags shine under the Florida sun. Anything short of a dominant display and an easy win would be a concern.

Big Jim Handicap: -7.5/42.5

Ladbrokes Market: -4.5/39.5

Suggested Bets:

2 Unit Bet on Jaguars -4.5 at the line

2 Unit Bet Total Points Scored 39.5

Buccaneers @ Saints

The Bucs have pretty much blown their season. So much talent and such little output. I like the Saints to keep their roll going even though this screams as a danger game for them. I am keeping the faith due to the exploits of one man. Drew Brees is just an inspiration and he will keep this ship steering straight. This is also the best Saints D we have seen in years and if they continue to improve “Who Dat” could be a serious team.

Big Jim Handicap: -7/46.5

Ladbrokes Market: -6.5/51

Suggested Bets:

1 Unit Bet on Saints -6.5 at the line

2 Unit Bet Total Points Scored UNDER 51

Rams @ Giants

Very interesting game this one. The Rams just have to keep winning. The Seahawks revival makes that imperative. This game could well turn into a grind which you would think favours the G-Men at home. I think that this Rams side might have a bit more maturity than some think and I think that the Rams can find a way (and cover the spread) even if the game isn’t played on their terms.

Big Jim Handicap: +3.5/38.5

Ladbrokes Market: +3/41.5

Suggested Bets:

2 Unit Bet on Rams -3 at the line

2 Unit Bet Total Points Scored UNDER 41.5

Falcons @ Panthers

Both of these sides are lucky to be batting over .500 this year. This is one hell of a crazy Division. With the Saints now a serious contender for the title a Divisional loss here for either side is going to make it a tough run home. This game is too close to call so when that happens look for the value.

Big Jim Handicap: pick/46.5

Ladbrokes Market: -1/44

Suggested Bets:

1 Unit Bet on Falcons to WIN the game (Money line)

2 Unit Bet Total Points Scored OVER 44

Broncos @ Eagles

The Eagles are the only team that has only one blemish for the season. I don’t think that is going to change tonight. At some stage the Eagles are going to be tested but at home against the Broncos is a dream match-up for Philly. It might not be pretty but the Eagles should just grind out the win. UNDER the best play by a mile as the line is big.

Big Jim Handicap: -9.5/41

Ladbrokes Market: -8/44

Suggested Bets:

1 Unit Bet on Eagles -8 at the line

3 Unit Bet Total Points Scored UNDER 44

Ravens @ Titans

Titans are another one of these teams with a winning record but a negative points differential. Its been a strange old NFL season. The Titans have had two weeks to contemplate just how close they came to giving the Browns their first win of the season. The Ravens are coming off a false high against the Dolphins and I think they are ripe for the picking today. I think the Titans keep their winning start to the season going and they should make a dent on that differential. I am assuming this game is still down due to Mariota. I have handicapped this game with Marcus suiting up for the Titans. If he plays I think they win easily in a low scoring game.

Big Jim Handicap: -6.5/42

Ladbrokes Market: NO MARKET AVAILABLE at time of publication.

Sunday Late Games

Cardinals @ 49ers

What a horrible game this could be! I am going to remain positive and I actually think it might be more entertaining than many think. How the Cards have won 3 games this year I will never know. They are a well below average football team but come into San Francisco rested and with an edge on talent. The 9ers have had a heart-break kind of year and it will be interesting to see what kind of a distraction the Garoppolo signing has had. An early round second round pick next year seems a sweet deal for the Pats but time will tell if the 9ers have also done well out of the trade. I predict that the team that gets on top today might run away with it at the end. Both teams will believe they can win this game and its going to a soul destroyer for the loser.

Big Jim Handicap: +3.5/43

Ladbrokes Market: +2.5/39.5

Suggested Bets:

2 Unit Bet on Cardinals -2.5 at the line

2 Unit Bet Total Points Scored OVER 39.5

Redskins @ Seahawks

The Seahawks just keep on getting lucky. How they won that shoot-out last weekend I will never know. Things outside of their control always fall their way. I don’t want to back the Seahawks here today as I am still far from convinced about them but “as always” they get the Redskins at the perfect time. The Skins have been brave this year but last weeks crushing home loss has basically ended their season. No run, no receivers and no offensive linesmen. You would think the Legion of Boom gets down and dirty with the Skins Offence today. UNDER seems like a gift.

Big Jim Handicap: -7/42.5

Ladbrokes Market: -7/46

Suggested Bets:

NO Bet at the line

3 Unit Bet Total Points Scored UNDER 46

Chiefs @ Cowboys

Well the Elliot show appears to be sidelined yet again. This time I think it might just stick. This is really going to hurt the Cowboys. I tend to think that good running backs are nearly as hard to replace as good QB’s. The big plus’s for the Cowboys is that Jason Garrett is now one of the best coaches in the game and they are at home. The Cowboys run won’t be as effective without their big smash mouth wrecking ball but it isn’t going to totally suck either. The Chiefs will have to improve after a sloppy effort against the Broncos. Its strange to get such an important game mid season with so many unknown variables at play. I agree with the market that this is a coin flip but I really like the UNDER here.

Big Jim Handicap: pick/46.5

Ladbrokes Market: pick 52

Suggested Bets:

NO Bet at the line

3 Unit Bet Total Points Scored UNDER 52

Sunday Night Football

Raiders @ Dolphins

Why am I so excited about this game. Both teams have been horrible this year. Both are a shadow of what they last year, but both amazingly still have reason for optimism with a win here tonight. There is a plethora of talent on show here and its just going to come down to who “brings” it the best on the night. The most important player tonight is Mack without any doubt. If Miami can stop the pass rush then they win. If Oakland can push the Miami line back and Mack can torment the Dolphins passing game like Suggs and Co did last week then they will win. Its an intriguing match-up. I am all over the Fins because I also think their D is far better than the puke they served up in Baltimore.

Big Jim Handicap: -2.5/42

Ladbrokes Market: +3.5/44.5

Suggested Bets:

3 Unit Bet on Dolphins +3.5 at the line

2 Unit Bet Total Points Scored UNDER 44.5

Monday Night Football

Lions @ Packers

Houston is the best team with a losing record in the NFL but the Lions aren’t far behind. It took me three days of round the clock electric shock treatment to get over last Sundays Lions loss to the Steelers. Would love to know how Matt Stafford dealt with it. If this was in Detroit then you could go ahead and give this game to Lions before the kick-off but with it being in Green Bay it makes things very interesting. The Pack have had 2 weeks to sort out their offence and even though Rogers is gone he set them up with a good start to the season. Its going to be one hell of an interesting game but I am going to be all over Stafford and the Lions to sort out their red zone blues tonight.

Big Jim Handicap: +4.5/45

I have to admit I love the number 8 and always have. After all, a billion Chinese can’t be wrong. So I am very confident that we are going to have another huge week of tips. We were up around 8 Units last week which was nice but I think we can hit double figures this week.

Lets Get Ready to RUMBLE>>>>>

Thursday Night Football

Dolphins @ Ravens

Matt Moore did a pretty good job for the Fins last week but they still need Cutler back and healthy if at all possible. I know what cracked ribs are like and if the reports are true he will miss at least 3 weeks you would think. Its D day for the Ravens. If this was in Miami I would love the Fins but I think this could go either way as the Fins are on a roll and the Ravens just have to win if they are to have any chance of competing in the postseason.

Vikings @ Browns

Things just keep looking better for the Vikings. This game just looks pretty simple to me. The Vikings D should go out and terrorise the Browns insipid Offence and then rely on their own offence to chalk up enough points.

Sunday Early Games

Falcons @ Jets

The Falcons are going horribly. They need to turn it around quickly and they should relish the chance today in New York. The big X Factor question is where are the Jets mentally right now. They won 3 on the trot and then lost two massive divisional games on the trot that they should have won. Its hard for young teams to pick themselves up from that kind of heartbreak.

Big Jim Handicaps: +7/47

Ladbrokes Market: +4.5/47

Suggested Bets:

3 Unit Bet Falcons -4.5 at the line

NO BET Total Points scored.

Panthers @ Buccaneers

In all likely hood the Saints are going to be sitting at 5:2 with a 1:0 Divisional record after today. This means that these two teams have to win this game. The Panthers were a little unlucky last week but it was still a performance that lacked conviction. Tampa Bay was supposed to be the team that was going to blow us away this year by how far they had come. Well lose today and kiss the season goodbye. This is a really tough game to handicap.

Big Jim Handicaps: pick/46

Ladbrokes Market: -2/45

Suggested Bets:

2 Unit Bet Panthers +2 at the line

1 Unit Bet Total Points scored OVER 45

49ers @ Eagles

This just looks like a tough day at the office for the 49ers. The Eagles are on a roll and there will be a packed house of blood thirsty Philadelphia natives baying for blood. They just might get what they want.

Big Jim Handicaps: -14.5/48

Ladbrokes Market: -12/47.5

Suggested Bets:

2 Unit Bet Eagles -12 at the line

NO BET Total Points scored

Bears @ Saints

The Bears win last weekend wasn’t as good as it looked on paper. Just look at how few times they moved the chains in that game. The champagne match-up in this game is the Saints offence taking on the Bears D. The bottom line here is that the Saints are going to score enough points to win this game. The margin is the only conundrum.

Big Jim Handicaps: -9.5/47.5

Ladbrokes Market: -8.5/49

Suggested Bets:

1 Unit Bet Saints -8.5 at the line

1 Unit Bet Total Points scored UNDER 49

Chargers @ Patriots

This is going to be a really interesting match-up. Are the Patriots vulnerable? Are the Chargers the real deal? Both are valid questions. I don’t think the Pats are vulnerable, at least not yet at this stage of the season. The Chargers are a better football team than their record suggests but this is going to be a big test. UNDER looks the best play.

Big Jim Handicaps: -7/44.5

Ladbrokes Market: -7.5/47.5

Suggested Bets:

1 Unit Bet Chargers +7.5 at the line

2 Unit Bet Total Points scored UNDER 47.5

Raiders @ Bills

This is the kind of game that Black Jack Del Rio usually finds a way to win. I am not so sure though today. The Raiders appeared to get their MOJO back last week but how much of that is going to stick. Carr is just not throwing it like he was last year. The Bills are a 4:2 football team and they are playing to the best of their ability and Buffalo is a happy place to be at the moment. This should be a cracker!!!

Big Jim Handicaps: -1.5/42.5

Ladbrokes Market: -2.5/45.5

Suggested Bets:

1 Unit Bet Raiders to WIN (money line) @ $2.20 (+120)

2 Unit Bet Total Points scored UNDER 45.5

Colts @ Bengals

This game could be really ugly. These two teams suck. Both of these teams already have no relevance this year. The Bengals suck a little bit less than the Colts but they aren’t 10.5 points better that’s for sure.

Sunday Late Games

Texans @ Seahawks

Only two late games but both are going to be awesome to watch. I can’t see the Seahawks scoring more than 20 points in this one. Then it just comes down to Watson and Hopkins and how well they deal with the Seattle defence. I lean towards the Texans as I think that they clearly have the more balanced team. Great betting game.

Big Jim Handicaps: -2.5/40

Ladbrokes Market: -5.5/46

3 Unit Bet Texans +5.5 at the line

3 Unit Bet Total Points scored UNDER 46

Cowboys @ Redskins

The Redskins dominated the Eagles for nearly two quarters of football on Monday night. IF (and its a big if) they can bring it for 4 quarters then they can win this game. With both teams at 3:3 this game is for double points. The loser here can write any chance of a Divisional title off and will face an up hill battle to even compete for a wild card spot.

Big Jim Handicaps: +3/46.5

Ladbrokes Market: +2.5/50.5

Suggested Bets:

1 Unit Bet Cowboys -2.5 at the line

2 Unit Bet Total Points scored UNDER 50.5

Sunday Night Football

Steelers @ Lions

This is going to be one hell of an important clash. Both of these sides are good football teams. I am leaning towards the Lions because this game is just SO important to them. The Steelers are playing great but have been a little up and down regarding form this year. Great prime time match-up.

The Broncos are going to be the perfect tonic for the Chiefs woes. Its a great chance for the Chiefs to show a really dominant display on defence. Then if they can rack up 20 or so points on offence then they should win this and win it easily.

Super Bowl replay. The Packers with no Rogers. Are the Skins contenders or pretenders in the NFC East? Are the Cardinals one week wonders or have they found their MOJO again? These and many more questions will be answered in an exciting week coming up in the NFL.

Lets get down to business.

Thursday Night Football

Chiefs @ Raiders

Big games here tonight. Its one of those strange scenario’s where the stakes for the loser is higher. A loss for the Raiders pretty much ends their season. A loss for the Chiefs and all that early season momentum will be a thing of the past with two consecutive defeats. The Raiders will lift but are they going well enough to beat the Chiefs? I think the simple answer to that is no. Great match-up.

Buccaneers @ Bills

Plenty to like about the Bills tonight. The Buc’s have injuries and are coming back off a thumping on the road (it was a thumping don’t worry about the final score). The Bills have had two weeks to get ready for this and they will believe they can win. The problem is that the Bucs have the better list and its one of those games where you have to line up form with potential ability. UNDER probably the safest option depending on where it opens obviously. No market available due to Winston injury. I have handicapped this with Winston PLAYING. If he doesn’t play probably goes to around -6.5/40.

Ravens @ Vikings

What a week for the Vikings. Along with the Saints they all of a sudden gain relevance in 2017. Tonight we find out if they are the real deal. The Ravens continue to mix their form and its hard to see Flacco and his mob scoring enough to trouble the Vikes at home.

Jets @ Dolphins

The Dolphins are 3:2 and have averaged 12.2 points a game on offence. They have a point differential of -23. 2 points worse than the 3:3 Jets who have a point differential of -21. So what does that mean? Well, both teams are finding ways to win but aren’t dominant in any regard. The Jets were good against the Pats but the Dolphins might just have found their MOJO. Dolphins at home should be too good. Just a question of the margin. The upside for the Fins is way higher than the Jets who have played above and beyond their list in their first 6 games.

Big Jim Handicaps: -9/43

Ladbrokes Market: -3.5/39

3 Unit Bet Dolphins -3.5 at the line

2 Unit Bet Total Points scored OVER 39

Cardinals @ Rams

You just never know how a team can find its feet. Angry Peterson rocks into the desert and the Cards look a totally different team. Its a good fit for both the Cards and Angry who both need an offence created around the run. The Rams got lucky against the Jags but they were due some luck. I like the Rams to keep the roll going today. Again just margin concerns.

Jaguars @ Colts

The Colts were brave in the first half against the Texans. The problem is that without Luck they are predictable on offence. The Jags were average last week which means they should be world beaters this week. Important clash here for both franchises if they want to compete with the Texans and Titans.

Saints @ Packers

Fascinating game. The Saints should win and with the rest of their division showing signs of cracking they will be getting excited down South. Why this game is so interesting is that Green Bay and their young untested QB are going to have to attack as we know that Brees and the Saints will score. This is a good thing I think for the Packers. I just think the Packers are going to be more competitive at home than many people think.

Big Jim Handicaps: +4/50

Ladbrokes Market: +5/48

Suggested Bets:

1 Unit Bet Packers +5 at the line

1 Unit Bet Total Points scored OVER 48

Panthers @ Bears

This is a serious danger game for the Panthers. They really have to win this one and the Bears will believe they are going pretty well. The Bears have beaten the best two teams in the AFC North already this year. I think it is going to be hard for this young Bears outfit to put in two big giant beating performances on the trot this year even though they are at Soldier Field today. They will come out and give it a crack but I just think the Panthers might have the answers today. Let’s just hope for good weather and some scoring.

Titans @ Browns

The Titans were average winning on Monday night and they have a short week to prepare for this one. The good news is, however, that they get the Browns who have been worse than we could have ever thought they were going to be in 2017. If the Titans are the real deal they win here and win well.

Late Games

Cowboys @ 49ers

This is always a great match-up. The two clubs have such a great history against each other. Elliot continues to find judges that are willing to keep him on the field. If he wasn’t there I might be tempted to take the 49ers but as long as he continues to play they are going to use him all day long. An extra week to prepare, 49ers coming off another heart-breaker, there are just too many ticks for the Cowboys in this one. It might be the day the dam bursts if the Cowboys get out to an early lead.

Big Jim Handicaps: +9.5/46.5

Ladbrokes Market: -6/46.5

Suggested Bets:

3 Unit Bet Cowboys -6 at the line

Broncos @ Chargers

I love the Chargers today. That is something you will very rarely hear me say. The Broncos are SO over-rated. Their offence is horrible and the Chargers should dish it up to them just as bad as the Giants did on Sunday Night. The Giants killed the Broncos in the secondary and the Chargers should kill them on the pass rush. Mr Complainer should have enough under centre for the Chargers to get away with this. Might not be a lot of offence so love the UNDER as well. Great betting options on what might be an average game.

Big Jim Handicaps: -6.5/36

Ladbrokes Market: -1.5/42

Suggested Bets:

3 Unit Bet Chargers -1.5 at the line

3 Unit Bet Total Points scored UNDER 42

Bengals @ Steelers

The Bengals will be feeling a lot better about themselves their horrible start to the season. I think they come crashing back down to earth in Pittsburgh today. If the Steelers defence continues to improve they should give Andy Dalton plenty of headaches. Bell is back and should skip around the Cincy D like a rabbit running down a hill.

Big Jim Handicaps: -12.5/46.5

Ladbrokes Market: -5.5/42.5

Suggested Bets:

3 Unit Bet Steelers -5.5 at the line

2 Unit Bet Total Points scored OVER 42.5

Seahawks @ Giants

If you like free flowing football with plenty of offence on show; Get as far away from this game as you possibly can. This one will come down to which Offence doesn’t implode the worst. The Giants can win this. The Seahawks are an average football team. Great betting game on a dour game that could go either way.

Big Jim Handicaps: pick/35

Ladbrokes Market: +6/40.5

Suggested Bets:

3 Unit Bet Giants at the line

3 Unit Bet Total Points scored UNDER 40.5

Sunday Night Football

Falcons @ Patriots

This is just going to be a blockbuster. Nothing more, nothing less. Both teams have struggled this year but considering what went down in the Super Bowl less than a year ago this will be an emotional night. Hard to handicap here. Anything could happen and the UNDER seems like a GREAT option considering its 56 and I expect that both teams might take awhile to ease into this game.

Redskins @ Eagles

This is a good Monday Night Game. NFC East games are always good. The four teams have always hated each other and fans of both these two teams are pretty happy right at this point in time. The line is on the mark, so lean towards the UNDER as my proffered play of the night.

“Markets Start to tighten up”

Big Jim is ready to rock and roll and give you all the winners for a massive Week 6 of the 2017 NFL Season…read more

What always happens around this time of year is that my handicaps start to get closer to where the market falls. This is exactly what you would expect and it happens to all good handicappers. What that means is that we will end up with more NO bets and more 3 unit bets on the flip side. So obviously much less 1 and 2 unit bets than we had in the first 5 weeks. Also you have to mindful of how to read the differences in handicaps. The difference between a line of 2.5 and 3 is a far greater discrepancy than say 7.5 to 9.5 even though its 2 points compared to only half a point. Experienced NFL punters will understand this.

If its all a bit confusing then simply follow the Unit betting that I suggest and you will do just fine. Some awesome games this week lets get down to it.

Thursday Night Football

Eagles @ Panthers

Such a great match-up this early on in the season and on Thursday Night which is awesome. Both sides off to an amazing start and both will believe that they can win their respective Divisions. For that to happen both have to keep winning football games its just that simple. As you can see there is just no separation in my handicaps and the market so 1 unit on the OVER for interest but not a great game to bet on. I will at least always give you 1 unit on each game. Sometimes you just have to enjoy the game and write it off as a good betting proposition.

Sunday Early Games

Bears @ Ravens

Can the Ravens keep doing what they did on offence against the Raiders? The Bears D is slightly better than that of the Raiders but we will learn a lot this week. I lean towards the Ravens here at the line as I think the Bears will consistently struggle on the road.

Big Jim Handicaps: -7/41

Ladbrokes Market: -6/40

Suggested Bets:

2 Unit Bet Ravens -6 at the line

1 Unit Bet Total Points scored OVER 40

Browns @ Texans

Its been a tough week for the Texans but the Browns at home is a perfect match-up for them. The UNDER here is one of my best for the week and I think the market over reacted from the shoot-out in Houston last week. Slight lean towards the Browns at the plus as 9.5 is a lot of points in what should be pretty low scoring.

Big Jim Handicaps: -7.5/42.5

Ladbrokes Market: -9.5/48

Suggested Bets:

1 Unit Bet Browns +9.5 at the line

3 Unit Bet Total Points scored UNDER 48

Packers @ Vikings

Huge win for the Pack last week against the Cowboys and many questions left to be answered for the Vikings. The bottom line for the Vikings is that unless Bradford is fully fit they just have to sit him. If the Packers beat Dallas on the road then they should beat the Vikings easily in a Divisional game that in reality is more important. Go the Cheese Heads.

Big Jim Handicaps: +7/46

Ladbrokes Market: +3/47

Suggested Bets:

3 Unit Bet Green Bay -3 at the line

1 Unit Bet Total Points scored UNDER 47

Lions @ Saints

This is going to be a very interesting match-up. The Saints have had a good rest and bounced back to life after a horrible start to the season. The Lions will be licking their wounds after hitting their first serious speed bump of the season last weekend. I just think the Lions are a better more rounded team and if they can keep Brees semi under control they should be able to ground out the win. Great Game!!!

Dolphins @ Falcons

This is a strange one. Form suggests the Falcons in a cake walk. I think they will win but it might be closer than people think. Its going to be very interesting to see how the Miami Offence goes about this game. They are going to have to gamble on offence as to have any chance today as they are going to have to score points. The Falcons D is better than it was last year but it isn’t bullet proof.

Big Jim Handicaps: -9.5/46.5

Ladbrokes Market: 11/46.5

Patriots @ Jets

I am always very careful in games like this. The Jets have been so much better than we expected and the Pats have been slightly disappointing. If you handicapped this game prior to the season you would have probably given the Jets a 17.5 start so even considering form I think +8.5 is light on here for the Jets against the Pats juggernaut.

Big Jim Handicaps: +13.5/47

Ladbrokes Market: +8.5/48

49ers @ Redskins

Eventually you would think that the 49ers are going to crack and get blown away. It’s tough when you keep on showing bravery to fall short time and time again. Having said that I lean towards the 49ers at the big plus but the UNDER is my much proffered betting option here.

Buccaneers @ Cardinals

Really like the Buc’s here tonight. They have had the extra 3 days rest to get ready for this and they are going to take out some positives in their performance against the Pats even though they lost. The Cards are just a rabble and I can’t see how they can turn it around in a week.

Big Jim Handicaps: +6.5/45

Ladbrokes Market: +2/45

Rams @ Jaguars

This is a really interesting game. Both of these sides are good football teams at their best. Both of these sides, however, are capable of imploding on any given day. That makes it very hard to handicap either team as you just have no idea what you are going to get served up. UNDER the play here.

Big Jim Handicaps: -3/40.5

Ladbrokes Market: -2.5/42

Suggested Bets:

1 Unit Bet Jaguars -2.5 at the line

Steelers @ Chiefs

This is another really interesting match-up. The Chiefs are obviously cruising at the moment. When you start 5:0 that speaks for itself. For me KC has improvement left in them. The Steelers won here in last years playoffs in a bruising encounter and Pittsburgh will be bleeding from last weeks horrible showing. I think this could be a close game, Pittsburgh have always been a side that likes it when the going gets tough. CRACKING GAME!!!

Weeks 5 and I’m flying on High”

Big Jim buckles up for another high octane week of Football. Tips and previews for all NFL Week 5 games….read more

Well as they say, you can’t win every week. It was a tough Week 4 at the office for Big Jim but we are still up over 20 Units on the year and we have another Week of games to get the ball rolling again. Usually by Week 4 you have a better understanding of how the season is going to go but with only the KC Chiefs remaining undefeated its a very close season. What that means is that we have more amazingly important games than we normally do by this stage of the season and there are some MASSIVE clashes this week. Time to get excited.

Lets get down to business:

Thursday Night Football

Patriots @ Buccaneers

This is an absolute belter of a Thursday Night game. The Bucs have got to be reasonably happy with their start. They have played well below expectation in many regards but sit at 2:1. Tonight we get to see how far they have really come in 2017. The Pats were very un-Pat like last week at home. The Pats could so easily be 1:3 and have have already had 3 home games. Bleeding 128 points on defence is their big concern. Their offence will find its mojo but their defence has to improve if they want to be the best of the best. I think there will be scoring but 56 is a HUGE total to cover in any NFL game.

Big Jim Handicaps: +4/50

Ladbrokes Market: +4.5/56

Suggested Bets:

1 Unit Bet Bucs +4.5 at the line

3 Unit Bet Total Points scored UNDER 56

Sunday Early Games

Jets @ Browns

Who could have thought that the Jets are one very winnable game away from a 3:2 start to the season. Lets not get too carried away as they weren’t that good against the Jags and they may still be a very average team with an amazing start to the season. The Browns were dead set disgraceful last week against the Bengals. Today’s game is one that the Browns would have pencilled in as a certain win this season. If the Browns don’t come out here breathing fire then they are a long way behind where I thought they were and the axe will start to get sharpened in Cleveland.

Big Jim Handicaps: -3/41.5

Ladbrokes Market: pick/39.5

Suggested Bets:

2 Unit bet Browns TO WIN (money line)

2 Unit Bet Total Points scored OVER 39.5

Panthers @ Lions

This is another massive game for both clubs. These are two NFC rivals who both sit at 3:1. Both Franchises will view this season as a failure if they don’t make the play-offs. Two of the best younger QB’s going around and both coming off impressive road wins last start. This should be a very good game but I think Stafford gets the job done again.

Big Jim Handicaps: -4/47

Ladbrokes Market: -2.5/43

Suggested Bets:

2 Unit Bet Lions -2.5 at the line

2 Unit Bet Total Points scored OVER 43

49ers @ Colts

This is one of the very few games this weekend that has very little meaning. I predicted the Colts were going to bad this year (Colts season preview click here) and I have be proven correct. Chuck Pagano is going to escape criticism with Luck’s injury. Even though Luck would have made the Colts better I still think they would have been on the nose. Lets see how the 9’ers bounce back after a heartbreaking loss to the Cards. They were the better team last week and lost the game. So many variables in this one. Lets hope they both decide to turn up and tackle.

Big Jim Handicaps: -2.5/40.5

Ladbrokes Market: -2/44.5

Suggested Bets:

3 Unit Bet Total Points scored UNDER 44.5

Titans @ Dolphins

Well its now or never for the Dolphins. The Fins have been one of the really disappointing stories this year. Their only saving grace is that they finally get a game in Miami this week. The Titans are a serious football team that fell into a deep hole last week. A belting at the hands of the Texans is going to be a big mental chip in their armour. They need to come out this week and bounce straight back as it appears that the Texans have found their mojo under centre and that is going to make the Titans main Divisional rival very hard to chase down. I have handicapped this game with Mariota NOT playing and without him I think the Dolphins find a way to win.

Bills @ Bengals

Love them Bills. Might be the best feel good story of the year so far. Many experts are going to say that its only a matter of time before the wheels fall off. I am not so sure as when winter hits their home field advantage is enormous. The Bengals are going to have drawn a line through the first three weeks and are going to be mentally strong after their good win on the road last week. This could be a really close game and one that is of high interest in regards to both of these teams moving forward. If the Bills can keep AJ Green under control they win. That, however, is not an easy thing to do.

Chargers @ Giants

Battle of the DUDS. There are only four win-less teams in the NFL after 4 weeks and this games features two of them. The other two are the 49ers and the Browns and they both have excuses where as these two Franchise’s do not. The Giants are struggling with having a horrible offensive line and an injured Odelle Beckham Jr. The Chargers are struggling with having a grumpy over the hill QB and a team that just doesn’t know how to win. The Chargers have the better form but I lean towards the Giants. The Giants are capable of bringing it and they should be fired up at home. They just have to keep Joey and his A Grade Chargers pass rushers away from Eli.

Big Jim Handicaps: -4/44.5

Jags @ Steelers

What the hell is wrong with Antonio Brown now!!! The Steelers have the AFC North on toast but you just get the feeling that things could go horribly wrong in the Steel City. They would be in a world of hurt if Big Ben goes down I can tell you that much for free. The Jags are a total unknown commodity as the difference between their best and their worst is SO FAR apart. This is a danger game for the Steelers if the “good” Jags show up in Pittsburgh.

Cardinals @ Eagles

The Eagles are going great guns. What a recruit Le Garrette Blount has turned out to be for Philly. He is an angry man who has a steely resolve to prove the Pats wrong. Add to this the further improvement of Wentz and his nice new array of receiving talent and then you have a pretty good football team. Their defence is solid and will continue to get better. The Cards are the worst 2:2 team in football. They have only managed 74 points on offence this year which is down right pathetic considering they have played the Colts and the 49ers. The Eagles will win this with a claw in the air, the margin is the only concern.

Big Jim Handicaps:-10/43.5

Sunday Late Games

Seahawks @ Rams

The first of an AMAZING 3 afternoon games. I predicted that the Rams (click here for Rams season Preview) were a good smoky for the NFC West. You can put a line through the Cards and the 49ers already so that means its either the Rams or the Seahawks. So what THAT means is that this game is worth basically worth two wins. The Rams are at home and the sun should be shining in LA. Don’t be fooled by the Seahawks scoreline last week against the hapless Colts. Remember Seattle trailed in that game at half time. The City of LA will be getting excited and expect a big crowd and a fired up Rams coming off a massive win last weekend. I think the Rams are good things here today. Just don’t let Goff get smashed in the mouth too many times early on and they should get the job done in what should be an awesome game.

Big Jim Handicaps:-3.5/39.5

Ladbrokes Market: -1.5/47

Suggested Bets:

2 Unit Bet Rams -1.5 at the line

3 Unit Bet Total Points scored UNDER 47

Ravens @ Raiders

Big things were expected from both of these teams in 2017. Both are coming off 2 consecutive losses and the loser here can start to seriously panic. The Ravens are averaging a pathetic 15 points a game this year on offence which flatters them to be truthful. I thought their were positive signs in Baltimore but the last two weeks suggests that they are well below average. The Raiders defence is slightly better than last year but their offence looks a shadow of its former self. The Beast has been OK, Pryor has been horrible and Carr is beat up. Their Offensive line has been so bad that they are being accused by some of letting defences get to Carr on purpose because he stood for the anthem. What a debacle. Del Rio has to read his team the riot act and they just have to bring it here today. If its close the Ravens can steal it but I have a feeling that the Raiders might blow them away.

Big Jim Handicaps:-9.5/44.5

Ladbrokes Market: -2.5/39.5

Suggested Bets:

3 Unit Bet Raiders -2.5 at the line

2 Unit Bet Total Points scored OVER 39.5

Packers @ Cowboys

Giddy Up for the game of the week. These two sides always put on a show!!! The Packers have had a nice long break to prepare for this and hopefully their O line is fit and ready to go. The Cowboys are going to be furious at their pathetic display against the Rams here at Dallas a week ago. There are so many intriguing question in this game but to me the key is how well Elliot goes against the very solid GB run defence. Should be a great game but I think the Packers are a slightly better all round team and Rogers class will be the difference.

Big Jim Handicaps: +2.5/49.5

Ladbrokes Market: -2/52.5

Suggested Bets:

3 Unit Bet Packers +2 at the line

Sunday Night Football

Chiefs @ Texans

This game is the cherry on top of an amazing day of football. The underrated against a team that is finally living up to potential. Smith was amazing against an underrated Washington Defence on Monday night but now he has to step up and take on a Defence that is seriously scary. The other side of the fence features the Watson/Hopkins show for Houston going up against a man named “Houston” and his mob so there is plenty to like there as well. The Chiefs are so well drilled and professional but the Texans are at home and are starting to get that serious self belief. This should be a cracker but I think the Texans can keep that roll going. Should be close and expect some big hits and some good defence 47 seems like a lot of points here to me.

Big Jim Handicaps: -2.5/39.5

Ladbrokes Market: +1/47

Vikings @ Bears

Really!!! Is this really the best you could have come up with for Monday night Mr NFL scheduler? I know this is a Divisional match but if you had of read my season preview for the NFC North (click here) then you would have worked out that the NFC North was a two horse race that neither of these two teams had a starter in. I like the Bears here. They are starting their rookie QB and I think they have a big home field advantage at Solider Field especially against a team that plays under a roof. My Handicap here is with Bradford NOT playing for the Vikings.

“What we learnt Week 4”

Its funny and its topical! Big Jim takes a look at the movers and shakers of Week 4 of the 2017 NFL Season…read more

I always consider that at the completion of Week 4 you have a much better understanding of actually where teams are at. The cobwebs should be well and truly cleaned up, special teams should have sorted things out, coaches have a better understanding of new talent and most importantly we can put a solid cross through about half the competition in regards to being serious contenders not just for the Super Bowl but for the play-offs in general.

  • Green Bay were good but not great against the Bears. Monty’s ribs are a concern but reports suggest they aren’t that bad. The Packers at 3:1 are travelling along perfectly, time to bring on the Cowboys.
  • The Dolphins suck. What a wasted opportunity considering the Pats start to the season.
  • Deshaun Watson and Andre Hopkins could be one of the greatest combinations in the history of the NFL. Its an early call but it can happen.
  • Pats, Cowboys and Falcons all lose at home to teams who didn’t make the play-offs last year. OF COURSE……what is happening this year!!!
  • Baltimore offence is legless. Sometimes no matter how hard you polish a piece of shit you can’t turn it into a diamond. They should have forked out some dollars and gotten Flacco something to work with.
  • This is the worst loss of the last two years for the Browns. This Franchise needed to bring the kitchen sink and throw in at the Bengals but they bought cream puffs instead. Shite “BROWN” performance across the board.
  • The Lions gritted their teeth and ground out the win. It was a massive Divisional road scalp and they did it on a day where plenty of their NFC contenders fell in a pit. It wasn’t pretty but it didn’t have to be.
  • The Jets tried every conceivable way to lose against the Jags; The Jags were so bad they couldn’t accommodate. What a horrid game of football.
  • Big Jim had a headache after the early games.
  • Don’t feel sorry for the Chargers and don’t be fooled by Rivers statistics today.
  • Eagles hanging tough and the Cowboys loss should have Philly starting to believe.
  • Odelle Beckham Jrn showed real toughness today. The Giants aren’t a 0:4 team but good luck making the play-offs from 0:4.
  • Tampa got the win. Nothing more, nothing less and they needed it after last weeks poor effort.
  • I thought the Jags @ Jets was bad, then I had to witness the 49ers @ Cards. The 49ers have excuses but the Cards are really going bad! They didn’t deserve to win the game and I feel for the 49ers who clearly performed much closer to their ability. Clean outed needed at seasons end if not sooner.
  • Carr beat up, offensive line shot, Pryor going horribly and a 2:2 record; Raider Nation now moves home now for 3 games but there are some big problems in Oakland.
  • Don’t get fooled about the Broncos. They aren’t going that well either and got LUCKY today.
  • The Colts are running out of “Luck” big time.
  • The Seahawks can pile on garbage points late and gain some confidence but they are still a well below average offence.

Big Jim breaks down every Week 4 game in the NFL….read more

Well that was the week that was…its over let it go….But rest assured Week 3 in the 2017 NFL Season will be long remembered. The week that had it all!!! The great thing about the NFL is that you don’t get bad weeks; You just get great, amazing and UNBELIEVABLE.

Well Big Jim put up numbers that SHOULD never be forgotten either. Its no fluke as its his third week of profit this year (3 from 3). Let alone the +95 Units profit last year and a decade of winning tips prior to that. Week 3 numbers were:

Total Units Invested: 50

Total Winning Units: 33

Total Losing Units: 17

The numbers don’t lie!!!

Thursday Night Football

Bears @ Packers

Well the Bears were pretty damn good last week and the Packers were pretty damn average. The thing is they both recorded wins and the rest is academic. As I predicted the Bears will mix their form this year (click here to read Bears season preview). The Packers are a like an old reliable tractor just starting up to plough the first field of the new season. It needs plenty of oil, a tune up and it will splutter and rattle for a little until it warms up and runs like a dream. The Packers are going better than they were going at this time last year and will continue to get better and will be down right scary on offence when they get their O line sorted out. Packers easy!!!

Early Sunday Game from England

Saints @ Dolphins

Well two teams clash here at Wembley Stadium both of whom had BIG form turn arounds from last week. This isn’t easy to handicap as this could easily turn into a shoot out. If it is a shoot out then you have to favour the Saints as its their favourite brand of football. We will find out a lot about the travel weary Fins this week by how they bounce back after a disgraceful loss last week to the hapless Jets. Cutler and co should relish the chance against an average Saints D.

Titans @ Texans

Can’t wait for this one. Imagine if the Texans held on against the Pats!!! Well that is history and a narrow loss on the road to the Pats (even though they should have won) is still going to give the Texans and their rookie QB a mental lift. The Texans are getting better and should continue to dramatically improve. The Titans are already pretty darn good. I just think their form against the Seahawks is flattering as the Seahawks (especially on offence) aren’t going well at all. I think this is going to be fairly low scoring and close.

Big Jim Handicap: pick/37.5

Ladbrokes Market: +1.5/44

Suggested Bets:

1 Unit bet Texans TO WIN GAME @ $2.05 (+105).

3 Unit bet Total Points scored UNDER 44 FLAT.

Jaguars @ Jets

Heaven help trying to line up the form of these two Franchises. If we go on last week then we have to consider that both are better than we thought. I’m not so sure about that!!! The Jags are coming back from London while the Jets have had a nice cushy week at home after their first win for the season. IF the Jags are serious then they win here today. You can’t be a serious team and lose to the Jets this year. I’m not sure how far the Jags are going to go this year but I still think they can find a way to win here at MetLife Stadium but my interest from a betting perspective is low.

Big Jim Handicap: +3.5/39 FLAT

Ladbrokes Market: +3.5/39.5

Suggested Bets:

NO BET at the line.

1 Unit bet Total Points scored UNDER 39.5.

Panthers @ Patriots

Nothing better than a trip to the Pats after a horrendous home loss. This is a nightmare come true for Superman Cam and his Panthers. I just can’t understand what went wrong last week. Just so unreliable the Panthers!!! Even if they dramatically improve they will still most likely get their asses handed to them by a Patriots team who is always hungry. I am happy to take on the Pats (like I did successfully last week) and the Panthers are a team that should be able to compete but after last week….I just can’t have them.

Lions @ Vikings

Another HUGE match-up. Who knows maybe we will end up with 3 teams from the NFC North make the play-offs but most likely it will only be 2. So divisional records are nearly certain to be important, so winning this game could be equivalent to winning two games. It really is that important!!! The Vikings stepped up big time against the Bucs last week. We all thought the Bucs were going to be the real deal this year so its a good form especially without your starting QB. I am not going to bring up the final play in the Falcons @ Lions game but I have NO DOUBT that both of those teams are serious teams. I am leaning towards the Lions as I think Stafford has what it takes to lift this team up after last week. I am sure that the Lions are good and still undecided about the Vikings.

Bills @ Falcons

Sometimes you have games that really throw you. I am finding this game really hard to handicap. On paper the Falcons should win this and do it with ease. The problem is that the Bills are one of those danger teams. They have been written off across the board, they have a good new coach, a dangerous and talented QB and they are playing with belief. Add to that a pinch of attitude and a general “nothing to lose” demeanour and you have a team that can create waves on any given day. Anything can happen here but I lean towards the Falcons winning but the margin staying respectable.

What the HELL has happened to the AFC North. Wow this division is really on the nose. Lets forget about last week and lets forget about any AFC North Wild Cards. Both these sides sit at 2:1 after super easy start of the year draws, both had their pants pulled down last weekend, BUT one of them will win this Division (click here to see AFC North season preview). So what does that all mean? What it means is this is one hell of an important football game!!! Both will be better than they were last week, of that I have no doubt. The Steelers have the better offence and the Ravens have the better defence. Lean towards the Ravens with home field but only JUST as they have had heavy travel commitments this week. Tight and low scoring is my tip.

The Battle of the 0:3 Ohio teams. Bengals were better last week. Like much much better but you get the feeling the Browns are getting close to a win. The upside long term for the Browns is much better than the Bengals, but the Bengals must realise they are going to have limited opportunities this year to win games. You get that when you have a coach and a QB who are both average and should have been shown the door at the end of last season (click here to read Bengals season review). Excited about the game because the Browns, at the Pound, look to have a very juicy head start indeed.

Well we are going to find out if these 2:1 Rams are really ready to rumble. They have certainly had their moments so far in 2017 but things are about to get serious today in front of 100,000 screaming Texans. The Cowboys showed some amazing maturity on Monday Night against the Cards. It must be very pleasing for Jason Garrett to see his two young guns get totally dominated in the first half and bounce back and crucify their opposition on the road in the second. Cowboys should be singing “yippee ki yay” after this one.

Eagles @ Chargers

This is a danger game for the Eagles. The Eagles are getting it done but not with a whole lot of conviction. Having said that the Giants got the rub of the green last week in Philly. The Chargers for the second straight year are putting their hand up for being the best team with the worst record ever in football. The Bolts defence is pretty scary but their offence is a real worry. Rivers and Gates (especially RIVERS) are both GONZO and the sooner the Chargers realise that the future will be brighter in LA or Orange County or wherever they are from these days. Great betting game!!!

Gee. What a nightmare. This is like trying to work out who is more scary; Freddy Kruger or Jason from Halloween. The G Men must be close to hitting rock bottom. There is so much to hate about the Big Blue (don’t get me started) but they aren’t as bad as the puke they have served up in their first 3 losses. Having said that I am going to forgive the Bucs for last week. It wasn’t the loss that scared me but the way that they did it. I can’t stomach a defence that starts jumping around after a 3 and out or a sack when they have been toasted all day by the Vikes with a 4th string QB. Hopefully the Bucs have been read the riot act and will come out breathing fire down in the Florida sun.

The Cards showed that they have some real problems in their second half against the Cowboys. No wonder Bruce Arians doesn’t have any hair left. They dominated in the first half but if you don’t hurt your opposition on the scoreboard when you dominate then bad things tend to happen. The 49ers deserve credit where credit is due. They have been competitive in the their last two outings but have nothing to show for it. I would like to see the 49ers continue their improvement but I feel that the Cardinals might vent their frustration out on their divisional rivals.

Both came crashing back down to earth last weekend. My feelings is that we saw the real Broncos (click here to read Broncos season preview) and that the Raiders had an off day. I think the Raiders offensive line comes out today and makes a statement and they protect Carr against Von Miller. If they do that then they should win this important AFC West showdown. I JUST CAN’T BELIEVE the line here!!! I will be backing the Raiders at the line and to win the game.

CBN should give Cris Collinsworth and Al Michaels the night off. No point sending the A grade commentary team out for this one. Might be the worst Sunday Night Game EVER. Thank goodness flexible scheduling is on the way!!! The one thing you can say is that its important for both Franchises. I really think both of these sides are average. That might be being really kind. The Seattle Defence is clearly the best of the four teams on show tonight but -13.5 is a huge deficit for an offence like Seattle to overcome.

This should be a GREAT game. We know that both of these teams are pretty good; But just how good is the big question? The Skins were awesome against the Raiders but can they perform at that level consistently? Cousins seems to really lift for these nationally televised games. On the other side of the fence I love watching this Chiefs Offence let loose. A huge and VERY LOUD KC home crowd might be the big difference. I would be making the Skins my major play if they got out to +7 or +7.5 otherwise I will play conservatively and make the UNDER my proffered option.

Week 3…A week for favourites?”

Big Jim reviews EVERY week 3 game from the NFL….read more

The NFL understandably tries to schedule plenty of blockbusters in the first 2 weeks of the season. There aren’t as many blue chip games this week but there is still plenty of interest. In Week 5 the new NFL Scheduling process will swing into action which is a GREAT thing. What this means is that we will at least get the best games in Prime Time slots.

I don’t agree with putting on the Rams @ 49ers just for the sake of giving two struggling Franchises national airplay. Big game time slots should be reserved for teams with realistic chances of competing for Super Bowls. The NFL equalisation policy works and teams look to build over years to mount a challenge. Mostly the NFL gets these kinds of things right and at least they are moving in the right direction with this one. This is one area where the NRL are miles in front of the rest and its an area where the AFL has to follow suit.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with UNIT betting its very simple. Lets say your average bet is $10. For a one UNIT bet you would outlay $10 and for a three UNIT bet you would outlay $30. If you stuck to my UNIT betting system last year you would have finished the season a MASSIVE 95 Units up over the year. You do the math!!! You WIN with Big Jim.

Thursday Night Football

Rams @ 49ers

Well you have to give some credit to the 49ers last weekend. To be truthful I think it was more about the Seahawks going so bad than massive improvement from the 49ers. Seattle though is not an easy place to play and the 49ers showed good resolve when it counted. The Rams were bought quickly back to earth by the Redskins last weekend and it will be very interesting to see how they respond. For what its worth I think the Redskins are better than most think. I just think there is more upside in this Rams team. They are better on both sides of the fence than the 49ers and that should be enough to overcome home field advantage for the 9ers.

The Jags form is the problem with two starkly different performances in the first two weeks. The Ravens have been good but easy wins over the Bengals and the Browns doesn’t really tell us that much. So there are just SO many variables in this one and I have found it very tough to find solid lines.

The Broncos are seriously good chances of going 3:0. They will come and tackle hard and try and play mistake free offence. It makes sense and the Broncos are delivering the best football they are capable of. The real test for them is going to come when they play the “big two” in their division. The Bills were pretty good against the Panthers. I really like Tyrod Taylor and I hope he has a great season and gets a crack next year with this team when they will be better. The Bills have a real chance today if they don’t turn the ball over. Should be close whatever happens.

Steelers @ Bears

The Steelers are in the same boat as the Ravens. They sit at 2:0 but we haven’t really learnt anything about how they are really going. They have an aging offence and a new look D but they have gotten the job done when it matters. The Bears putrid display against the Bucs was easy to predict but I think they will really lift for home games in 2017. If the Bears can stick with the Steelers this could be closer than people might think.

The Saints threatened over the last few years to fall into a pit. Finally it appears they have toppled over the edge. To be truthful it comes at a good time. The rest of the division is on fire, so the Saints need to grab this opportunity to work towards the future. The coach, QB and their over paid running back will all be lucky to be wearing gold and black in 2018. Panthers easy today.

The Bucs on the other hand look to be a fairly complete team. They were good last year and should continue to be even BETTER this year. This is their first serious test of the year and we will know a LOT more about the chances of these two teams at the end of this game. I lean to the Bucs if Bradford plays and I LOVE the Bucs if he doesn’t.

It hard to see anything but a Pats win here but there is still plenty to like about this clash. Can the Texans offence continue to improve? Where is the Patriots defence really at? Will Bill Belichick let it all hang out in the post match press conference? Well at least we know the answer to the last one….categorically NO! The Texans put in a good one here last year in the play-offs and they come here with nothing to lose. Its all about improvement for the Texans and not getting any more injuries. They will come good later in the year and if their top ranked defence can get to Brady….who knows.

The Falcons, as I suspected, had the right personality to deal with “that” infamous Super Bowl loss. After Brady and Rogers, Stafford and Ryan are clearly the next best QB’s in the game. Both defences have improved but both will be tested here tonight. I think the Falcons just as their offence is just so multi dimensional but it could go either way.

This is another top shelf match-up. The Seahawks have been horrible so far this year. Well, worse than horrible with the ball, but still pretty good without it. The Titans looked polished last week and they must be licking their lips at the prospect of winning the AFC South and returning to the play-offs. If they are going to do that, they have to win games like this. Should be a cracker and the Seattle D against Marcus Mariota should be worth the price of admission alone. Think the Titans have the talent on both sides of the fence to go 2:1.

As soon as Phillip Rivers retires I will publicly come out and say how hardly done by the Chargers have been in resent years. While Rivers keeps playing I am going to enjoy the week after week self butchering efforts the Bolts serve up. Yet again they find themselves 0:2 and they should be 2:0. Its just that clear cut. Its a danger game for the Chiefs who were OK without being great against the Eagles. Having said that the Eagles might be a pretty good team. I did warn you pre season about the Bengals but 2017 is starting to look like a Freddy Krueger style slash fest for the boys wearing orange and black. 2 home games without a TD for a team with AJ Green at WR1 is beyond bad. Even the Bengals defence is worse than average. The Packers were better against the Falcons last week than the score board suggests and this should be a cake walk for Rogers and the Cheese Heads.

Its hard to start the season with a couple of road games and tonight they get their chance. No Johnson is a massive problem and might prove the difference. Its a tough gig wearing the Blue Star on your chest and there is going to be plenty of pressure on the Cowboys tonight and their 2 young stars on offence. “Week 2…Down to business”

Big Jim reviews EVERY week 2 game from the NFL….read more

Teams now have a game under their belt. Teams hit the ground running faster in the NFL than in most sports but it still takes a few weeks for most of the teams to hit top gear. There is a gradual improvement over the first 3 weeks of the season. The problem is that when you play in such a competitive competition and you only play 16 games in the regular season good teams have to find a way to win. It’s nearly impossible to make the playoffs if you start an NFL season 0:3.

Big Jim punters had a great start to the season with plenty more winners (10 Units up) than losers so lets get down to business.

“Terrible” would be kind in describing these two teams in Week 1. I expected a slide from the Bengals but I was shocked at how bad the Texans were. I have to stick with my faith in the Texan Defence to really hit back hard tonight. Sometimes it’s good to identify the best of the 4 teams on display and I have no doubt that the Houston Defence is clearly the best of the 4 on display tonight. Both teams are desperate and I suspect it to be fairly tight and amazingly emotional at the start of this game. Juicy start here for the Texans and one of my best for the week.

Antonio Brown was great last weekend racking up nearly 200 yards of receptions. I expect Big Ben and Leveon Bell to improve on last week. The other three teams featuring today still have plenty to prove. Today is going to tell us a lot about the Vikings in general and the new look Pittsburgh defence. The Steelers should WIN the game in what will be a great physical contest. Just lean towards the Vikes at the big +6 regarding line betting.

Patriots @ Saints

Just like Seattle, the Patriots get the perfect opponent after their loss in Week 1. If Bradford beat up on this Saints defence then you can only imagine what Brady might do to them. Even more worrying than the Saints D was their Offence on Monday Night. It appeared that the acquisition of Adrian Pieterson is a negative not a positive. It’s early to say that but it was an average display by Angry. They have brought in a big name with a big ego into an offence that isn’t used to his style of game play. If the Saints offence doesn’t get back to scoring LOTS of points then 2017 looms as one hell of a long season down in the Big Easy. The only upside for the Saints is that they are at home so they better pray they get a big loud crowd and that the Pats have two bad days at the office in a row……yeh I agree…..I was clutching at straws when looking for a positive.

It comes as no surprise to me that this game looms as an early season blockbuster. I have high expectation for both of these teams and Week 1 confirmed them both as serious teams in 2017. It was always going to be a tough start to the season for the Eagles with two hard away games. They would be happy going into 1:1 but a 2:0 start and the Eagles all of a sudden will look scary. The Chiefs were only average early last year at home but Andy Reid and his new “sexy” brand of offence has had a long week to get them ready for this one. I think the Chiefs find a way to win but there is plenty to like about those Eagles especially at +4.5.

I think the Titans are better than what they showed last week and I don’t think the Jags are as good as the Texans made them look. Two teams coming off big defeats. The Colts were appalling in Week 1. The Cards lead the Lions into the 4th quarter (and Lions might be a pretty good team this year) but losing their run game is really going to test their offence. The Cardinals are another team that has had to start the season with two games on the road. A lot depends on what is going to happen under centre for the Colts. No Luck makes it very tough for them but Jacoby will be better than he was last week and should get the job with another week of QB1 reps under his belt. Hate betting on the Colts as they are BAD but +7 at home is a big head start against a team that has plenty of their own problems.

Two first Week winners suit up against each other but both of these teams defeated bottom three teams last week. The Bills really have a licence to surprise this year with fairly low expectations for 2017 surrounding the team. I like what I saw from them last week but I feel that the Panthers are going to consistently improve as the year goes on. Can’t wait to see McCaffrey go around again and as long as he keeps that ball secure his combination with Superman Cam should be enough to get the Panthers off to a 2 and zip start to the season. They are one frustrating football team and appear to have started 2017 in the same vein as 2016. Phillip Rivers has about as much control over his emotions as a 2 year old with ADD. First game in LA so you would think they will lift. The Fins haven’t had the advantage of a game yet but they must be pretty excited down there in Miami. If there were to be cracks in the Patriots armour then the Dolphins are the side that will benefit the most. Bring on my man Jay Cutler. Can’t wait for this one, should be a cracker. GO FINS!

The 9’ers struggled on offence against the Panthers at home last week and things are about to get a whole lot tougher. The only positive for the 49ers is that they should feel confident on defence against the Seahawks. I still don’t rate the Seahawks offence but I have a feeling that Wilson will make them look better than they really are this Week. They should get PLENTY of field time that is for sure. Having said that this Offence shouldn’t start 13.5 favourites against a High School team.

Big Jim Handicap: 10.5/42

Ladbrokes Market: 13.5/44

Suggested Bets:

1 Unit bet 49ers +13.5 at the line.

3 Unit bet Total Points scored UNDER 44.

Redskins @ Rams

The Rams aren’t going to get this game served up to them on a platter like they did in Week 1. The Redskins are a good enough team to come out here and at least compete. Having said that the Rams were really good and confidence should be sky high. Two winnable home games to start the season is a dream draw. If they can get to Kirk Cousins early and rattle his cage then I think the new look Jarred Goff lead offence has enough fire power to keep the Rams dream start going. In a tough game where I think the market is spot on I lean towards the Skins at the +3 but if the Rams were at -2.5 I would lean that way.

Big Jim Handicap: 3/46.5

Ladbrokes Market: 3/46.5

Suggested Bets:

1 Unit bet Redskins +3 at the line.

No bet Total Points scored.

Cowboys @ Broncos

You just got to hand it to the Broncos. Even when they hit a rebuilding stage they still find a way to be competitive. I thought they were ripe for the picking against the Chargers but in true Broncos fashion they got the job done. The Cowboys were good, without being great against the Giants. Dallas should win this game; We just have to wait and see if the Cowboys can grind out the wins like they did last year. Will be great to see how Dak Prescott goes at altitude against another good defence. Big game with the winner going to 2:0.

Big Jim Handicap: +3.5/42.5

Ladbrokes Market: 2/43

Suggested Bets:

2 Unit bet Cowboys -2 at the line.

1 Unit bet Total Points scored UNDER 43

Sunday Night Football

Packers @ Falcons

Do not….i repeat DO NOT miss this one. This is a Week 2 top shelf blockbuster to end all blockbusters. Wow….i mean WOW!!! The two combatants from last years NFC Championship game are set to go head to head in what should be a high voltage, high scoring game. The Falcons are going to be a totally different team than they were in Week 1 against the Bears. The Bears played well and the Dirty Birds got the job done but tonight they know they are going to have to bring their A game to win this one. I love the Pack this year and even though I think their Defence is going to get a taste of reality this weekend I think Rogers can deliver them the WIN in Atlanta. Just feel that the Packers are closer to their best at this stage of the season than Atlanta but don’t be surprised if we are watching the best two teams in the NFC going around.

Big Jim Handicap: +1.5/50.5

Ladbrokes Market: 2.5/54.5

Suggested Bets:

2 Unit bet Packers +2.5 at the line.

2 Unit bet Total Points scored UNDER 54.5

Monday Night Football

Lions @ Giants

I predicted that this was going to be a very important game prior to Week 1. Both of these sides had two tough, but winnable games to start the season. So this game becomes even MORE crucial to the Giants. Unless Odell Beckham can’t walk then I can’t believe that he won’t play. He just has to play as that Giants offence looked LOST without him. This is a big test for Stafford and the Lions. They CAN win this game and if they do, all of a sudden the Lions become a serious threat in the NFC.

Big Jim Handicap: +3.5/44.5

Ladbrokes Market: -4/44

Suggested Bets:

3 Unit bet Lions +4 at the line.

1 Unit bet Total Points scored UNDER 44

“Lets get ready to RUMBLE!!!”

Its opening night of the 2017 NFL Season and Big Jim is PUMPED….read more

For Week 1 Scroll Down

Life for me has more meaning when the NFL season starts. It’s only a short season so every winter drags on tirelessly for me until kick off. All the bull-shite is now over and we get 17 weeks (and then play-offs) to breathe in the game that all sports purists can’t get enough of. Its a big opening round so lets get under way. I will try and get Thursday night games to you early in the week and will have the full schedule of tips for Sunday and Monday up here on the site by Thursday.

Kansas City Chiefs @ New England Patriots

Its a tradition that the Super Bowl Champions kick off the season. I respect the Patriots as Belichick and Brady command it but I still hate them. The Pats are short priced favourites to go back to back this year and its hard to make a case why that can’t happen. As long as Brady stays fit you would think they start every game warm favourites. Having said that things can happen.

So what about the Chiefs? This is a good team. They are going to need Kelce and Hill to dominate again this year but I suspect that will happen. They will have their hands full with the Raiders in their Division and only time will tell if having their QB of the future learning his trade behind Alex Smith is a positive or a disruption. Coach Andy Reid has the experience to keep the ship steered in the right direction so I suspect the Chiefs are going to be hard to beat week in week out.

In regards to tonight I think the Patriots would have proffered a different opponent. IF (and its a big if) the Pats are a little rusty then the Chiefs are the sort of team that can hang tough. That’s how the Chiefs play. Reduce the mistakes and do the simple things right. Its a formula that wins you a lot of football games. It might not be enough for them to beat the Pats but with any luck it should at least stop any blow-outs.

Big Jim’s Handicaps: Flat 8/46.5

Ladbrokes Market: 9.5/49.5

(Please note. What this means is that I think the line should be a flat 8 and I think the Total Points line should be 46.5. The bigger the difference between what I think and what the market is, the more I bet on the game.)

Suggested Bets:

Bet 1 Unit on the Chiefs at +9.5

Bet 2 Units of the Total Points Scored UNDER 49.5

“Week 1… Bring it on”

Big Jim reviews EVERY game of the opening round of the 2017 NFL season….read more

Hello NFL fanatics. The talk is over and we are ready for a massive day of NFL action. Lets dispense with all the crap and get straight down to what matters. Picking winners and plenty of them.

Early Games

Jets @ Bills

Not much here to like. I think the Jets are the worst team in the NFL and they are coming up against a team that has basically resigned to a rebuilding year. Having said that I think the Bills will be tough this year. They have some exciting kids, a new coach and should end up 1:0 after today.

Big Jim Handicap: -9.5/44.5

Ladbrokes Market: +8/40

Suggested Bets:

1 Unit bet Bills -8

3 Unit bet Total Points scored OVER 40

Eagles @ Redskins

This should be a really good game. Its safe to say that the Eagles are going to improve this year. How much, is the big question. I like what they have done across the board and feel they can challenge for the Division. The Redskins are a really strange team and its going to come down to how quickly Gruden can get his new look offence firing. Hard game to access across the board and it could go down to the wire.

Big Jim Handicap: Pick/47 FLAT

Ladbrokes Market: +1.5/47

Suggested Bets:

1 Unit bet Redskins +1.5

Total Points Scored: NO BET

Raiders @ Titans

Probably the pick of the early games. Both of these sides will be expecting to play in the post season so this is a big game even for week 1. Both starting QB’s are coming off broken legs, both are emerging superstars so that battle will be fascinating. The Titans have home field but the Raiders travelled well last year. The Titans have a more solid D but the Raiders have a massive edge when it comes to Offence. This should be a cracker and cant wait. I just see this as a flip so going for the Raiders at the BIG head to head (money line) price!

Big Jim Handicap: +2.5/46 FLAT

Ladbrokes Market: -2.5/50

Suggested Bets:

2 Unit bet Raiders to win at $2.20

2 Unit bet Total Points Scored UNDER 50

Jaguars @ Texans

An important first week divisional show down. I really like the Texans this year for a host of reasons. The Jaguars may show marked improvement but that might still not be enough to see them challenge in an improving division. I expect Borttles to have a tough day at the office as the Texans Defence SHOULD be the best in the NFL. They were ranked nb1 last year and they get JJ Watt back into the line up. If the Savage/Hopkins relationship has gelled over the pre season then the Texans might have an easy day at the office.

Big Jim Handicap: -9/41.5

Ladbrokes Market: 5.5/39.5 (Pinnacle odds)

Suggested Bets:

3 Unit Bet Texans -5.5 at the line

1 Unit Bet Total Points Scored OVER 39.5

Cardinals @ Lions

Another very important game. Both of these sides will start the season as clear second picks in their division. Both Franchises will be judged on their ability to make the play-offs. The Cardinals are aging but they have an amazing running game and a bevy of wide out threats that should be far more damaging than the putrid figures they put up last year. The Lions have just signed gun slinger Matt Stafford to a HUGE contract extension so they will be wanting to celebrate in style. Lean towards the Lions but nothing would surprise here.

Big Jim Handicap: -3/49 FLAT

Ladbrokes Market: +2/48

Suggested Bets:

2 Unit Detroit to WIN @ $2.05

1 Unit Total Points Scored OVER 48

Steelers @ Browns

The Browns WILL improve but in saying that they are at least a year away from being a serious team. Come 2019 they could well be rocking this division. The Steelers have plenty of talent across the board and we know that the triple B’s in Big Ben, Brown and Bell are going to be super hard to contain. The real question for the Steelers is how far has their D improved since last yearThey need their stars on offence to remain fit and show marked improvement on defence to be serious contenders this year in the AFC.

Big Jim Handicap: -7.5/42.5

Ladbrokes Market: 8/47

Suggested Bets:

LINE: NO BET

3 Unit bet Total Points Scored UNDER 47

Falcons @ Bears

Plenty of people are happy to pot the Falcons this year. I am one that think we are going to get plenty more of the same as we got from the Dirty Birds last year. Their offence is simply awesome and they have RIGHT people at their club to deal with the Super Bowl hangover. The big question is has their defence has improved? The Bears are going to be a work in progress and time is going to tell what sort of outfit they are going to be. I think they will surprise at times but will remain pretty average for the most part.

Big Jim Handicap: +9.5/48 FLAT

Ladbrokes Market: 6.5/49

Suggested Bets:

2 Unit bet Falcons -6.5

1 Unit bet Total Points Scored UNDER 49

Ravens @ Bengals

Huge game for both clubs in this AFC North Week 1 Showdown. Both sides will think that they will be the team to fight it out with the Steelers for the division. I think the Ravens are going to be the real deal this year and I think the Bengals are set for a slide. This game will tell us a LOT about the chances of both Franchises in 2017. I suspect it could be a low scoring grind out win for the Ravens. Remember, my friends, this is a cut throat competition and with only 16 games in the regular season every game counts.

Big Jim Handicap: +3.5/39 FLAT

Ladbrokes Market: -3/41.5

Suggested Bets:

3 Unit bet Ravens +3 at the line

2 Unit bet Total Points Scored UNDER 41.5

Afternoon Games

Colts @ Rams

I am far from convinced about the Colts on any level. I just think they could be flat out average this year. The jury on the LA Rams is still well and truly out, but I just think the upside for the Franchise could well be rosey. The Rams have a huge edge on defence in this clash and I think the Rams offence is going to sharply improve. Think the market is close to spot on here but +4 is a big start against a team that likes to grind it out.

Big Jim Handicap: -3/43 FLAT

Ladbrokes Market: -4/41 FLAT

Suggested Bets:

1 Unit bet Colts +4 at the line

1 Unit bet Total Points Scored OVER 41 FLAT

Panthers @ 49ers

Well its Superman Cam time again. I have to say that Cam Newton always gives me plenty to write about and I need it after the Ryan Twins lost their jobs. I’m not 100% confident on what to expect from the Panthers this season but I think it will be better than what they served up last year. In regards to the 49ers I am nearly certain they are a bottom 3 team again. If the Panthers are the real deal they win here and do it convincingly. It won’t be pretty that is all I am really confident about.

Big Jim Handicap: +7/44.5

Ladbrokes Market: -5.5/47.5

Suggested Bets:

1 Unit bet Panthers -5.5 at the line

2 Unit bet Total Points scored UNDER 47.5

Seahawks @ Green Bay

A week 1 block buster. I think the Seahawks are going to struggle this year for a myriad of reasons. This is one of the toughest road trips in the game and I expect the Packers will be ready, willing and able to torch Seattle. Rogers is a champ and he should be able to break down this once fearsome Seattle defence. The other side of the fence is also going to be interesting with the GB Defence, and the Seattle Offence, both in desperate need of improvement from last year. I think GB can dramatically improve on D but I still think the Seattle O is far from being competitive as they are so one dimensional. If the Wilson to Graham act doesn’t fire then they look very vulnerable.

Big Jim Handicap: -7 FLAT/45 FLAT

Ladbrokes Market: -3/51.5

Suggested Bets:

3 Unit bet Green Bay -3 at the line

2 Unit bet Total Points scored UNDER 51.5

Sunday Night Football

Giants @ Cowboys

When you talk about rivalry is doesn’t get any bigger in the NFL than this NFC East divisional match-up. I think both of these sides have MANY questions to answer. I would have been pretty keen on the Cowboys but the loss of Elliot is huge. Anything could happen in this game and I mean ANYTHING. Very hard betting proposition but an amazing interesting game. This would be like a double win for either Franchise in a division that I see being very close.

Big Jim Handicap: -2.5/48.5

Ladbrokes Market: -4.5/47.5

Suggested Bets:

2 Unit bet Giants +4.5 at the line

1 Unit bet Total Points OVER 47.5

Monday Night Football Double Header

Saints @ Vikings

This looms as the Angry Pieterson show. A great first round piece of scheduling from the NFL and there should be plenty of fireworks. A high octane offence travels to a very good defence. This game will probably come down to which team out of the Vikings Offence and the Saints Defence has improved since last year. Another hard game but will be entertaining for a host of reasons. Love the Saints at the +3 but not so keen if it gets into +2.5.

Big Jim Handicap: pick/46 FLAT

Ladbrokes Market: -3/48

Suggested Bets:

3 Unit bet Saints +3 at the line

1 Unit bet Total Point Scored UNDER 48

Chargers @ Broncos

More questions than a trivia marathon here. There isn’t a huge amount to like about the Broncos this year. Their defence is going to be good but I don’t think its going to be scary like it has been in the past half decade. Their offence could be very average. The Chargers have made their move up north to LA and only time is going to tell us how that transition is going to effect them this year. I think the Broncos are just going to be average and the Chargers could be anywhere from putrid all the way up to challenging for the Division if things don’t work out in KC and Oakland. So make of that what you will.

Big Jim Handicap: -1 FLAT/44 FLAT

Ladbrokes Market: -3/43.5

Suggested Bets:

2 Unit Bet Chargers +3 at the line

1 Unit Bet Total Points Scored OVER 43.5

Cuttles is back!!!”

Big Jim weighs into the Jay Cutler signing in Miami…read more

I am over the moon that Jay Cutler has signed a 1 year deal with the Miami Dolphins. I was hoping that Cutler would end up in Texas but this is just as good. Cutler HAD to sign with a franchise that could be competitive. He would have been a total waste of time at the 49ers or the Jets but the Dolphins looms as a possible perfect fit.

The NFL needs Cutlers. In fact professional sport needs Cutlers in general. American sporting culture enjoys having a bad boy to talk about. Cutler isn’t that “top bloke” everyone loves. He is the cantankerous arse-hole that everyone loves to hate. This is good, it brings colour and intrigue. You never know what you are going to get from Jay and that is refreshing. It’s a million times more entertaining than the card board cut-out Russell Wilson types who you would love your daughter to bring home.

The upside with Cutler is big. Talent has never been the problem. His arm is super strong and super accurate. He brings a wealth of experience and at his best he was clearly a top 10 QB. Yes, he is getting older but physically he should be able to cut it. The other thing is that this offence is probably loaded with more talent than he has ever had at his disposal. Tannehill offered the Fins reliability but if Cutler gels in this system he can create brilliance that Tannehill couldn’t dream of.

The down side is that Cutler is a loose canon. He sooks when things don’t go his way. He pisses of coaches, other players, fans and the media. All of this is true but it only happens when things are going wrong. If things go wrong this year in Miami so what? At the worse case scenario you make Jake the Snake pack his bag at seasons end and no damage is done. If the Dolphins had of started the year with Moore under centre then they never would have had a chance to make the play-offs. With Cutler they can.

When you gamble you want minimum exposure for the possibility of the greatest reward and this seems to be exactly what the Miami Dolphins have secured with the Jay Cutler signing. The upside for everyone else is that we get another chapter in the saga that has been Cutlers up and down NFL career.

Big Trades keep coming”

Big Jim has a look at some of the big moves still being inked in the NFL prior to the 2017 season…read more

The Bills, Eagles and Rams have been really pro-active this week in regards to 11th hour NFL trades. I won’t bore you with names, cost and positions but I will tell you what it ultimately all means in lay terms.

Buffalo Bills: Bill have down graded a few of their very good players for a couple of younger players in key positions. Their reward for this is a 2nd and 3rd round draft pick at next years draft (2018). The Bills will now have even more clout than the Browns come next years draft. What this means is that the Bills are basically saying the mountain in the AFC East is too high to climb this year. It also means that Tyrod Taylor’s job under centre is going to be even harder.

Philadelphia Eagles: The Eagles have now finally addressed their corner back problems. If Ronald Darby blends into the Eagles system and can show the kind of form he showed in 2015 then the Eagles will get significantly better. With trouble in Dallas and question marks remaining in Washington and New York, the Eagles apparently consider their window is now open. I tend to agree. The Eagles have been trading masters in the last few years and this side is capable of having a top 15 offence and defence. If they can somehow make that a top 10 offence and defence then the sky is the limit both 2017 and beyond.

LA Rams: The Rams must be thinking that Goff is ready to go. This is probably a season before we expected it from last years Nb1 draft pick. The Rams are going to pay the big bucks to Sammy Watkins who will star in a pretty impressive receiving corp. This group could be so good that Tavon Austin won’t see much game time. If Goff IS up to it (and they can protect him) he now has the talent that can really make this offence hum. The problem is that the Rams are paying some of their talent big dollars for doing precious little and upcoming drafts are going to be mighty slim. They are gambling but if things go right they can push in a division now as the NFC West appears to be on the slide.

NFL is my bread and butter.

10 JULY 2017

Its hard to be an expert on all sports. I have my strengths and my weaknesses and in sports where my knowledge is thin I take advice from other experts I have met over the years. Good advice from winning punters is like gold and in the US you pay through the nose for it.

When it comes to the NFL there just isn’t anyone out there who is a better handicapper than me and I include all of those so called Vegas legends that charge you an arm and a leg for a couple of tips every week. I have had 12 winning years in the last 13 and last year you would have finished 95 Units up on my game by game betting (it would have been over 100 if Atlanta holds on in the Super Bowl). Every week I give a wide range of 3,2 and 1 Unit bets with tips on over 80% of the games. I will explain Unit betting to you closer to the season kicking off.

On 3 Unit bets I backed 2 winners for every loser in handicap markets. Find someone else with that kind of record!!! If you want to check my record visit www.theinsidewordonline.com where my 2017 NFL tips are archived. I spruiked Green Bay and Atlanta as my best two Super Bowl bets last year and picked 6 out of 8 divisional winners. Over the next few weeks I will be doing a division by division break down of the NFL. This is for all of you future traders out there so shop around, get a good price and trade throughout the year and you WILL WIN!!! I will be giving FUTURE ALERTS every week of the season just like I do for the NRL and AFL so you will know who to back and when.

So lets get started with the AFC North:

AFC NORTH

Pittsburgh Steelers

Many pundits will have the Steelers as their clear second pick for the AFC Title race. I have my reservations for a host of reasons but its hard to deny that this team at its best can beat anyone. Last year the Steelers were shot by the time they reached the well rested Pats in the AFC Championship game but it was testament to their ability that they even got that far in the first place. The Steelers were plagued by inconsistency all year but did enough by the end of the regular season to win the division, beat the Chiefs in KC in the play-offs and find themselves one win away from a Super Bowl birth.

Their strength lies in their offence. Antonio Brown remains a top 5 wide receiver. Many have him as the best in the game and even after his stupid home made videos in the dressing room last year he appears to be a dedicated Steeler.

Leveon Bell is a top 5 running back. The thing that makes him SO potent is that he plays the position in a different way than anyone ever has. You could say that he is a revolutionary in the style of Steph Curry in the NBA. He has an explosive burst of speed and waits for holes instead of ploughing blindly into where the holes “should” be. Again though, running backs can go from the penthouse to the dog house in a blink of an eye and he has had injury problems.

The last piece of the puzzle is Big Ben. Ben isn’t a top 5 QB any more but he has size, strength and two rings worth of experience and is the cement that holds the Steelers offence together. The BIG problem for BIG Ben is that he is a battle weary warrior and could very easily go down at any stage. If that happens all bets are off. Don’t get fooled by a reserve QB performance like Dak Prescott put on in Dallas last year as that happens once a decade and Tom Brady was the last to do it before Dak.

The defence is still a work in progress but should continue to improve. This team, however, is the polar opposite of the great Steelers teams of the past. This is an Offence driven team that relies on outscoring their opponents. The reason that I am happy to take a punt against the Steelers is that if anything happens to their big three weapons on offence then the whole thing can come crashing down.

Draw: Have to love their draw. Open and finish with the Browns and matches against NFC North and AFC South teams is a dream. They also get Green Bay at home. If you like them get on early as their run home is much tougher than their very cushy start.

Win Superbowl: $11.00 (Ladbrokes)

I won’t let the Steelers get under my guard in regards to winning the Superbowl as the talent is there. If Brady was to go down and they go injury free then they are a HUGE chance of making it to the big dance. They will be a break even proposition for me but 10/1 is a good price.

Win Division: $1.80 (Ladbrokes)

I think there are only two chances in this division. I thought the Steelers would be shorter than this but I don’t want to take the shorts on a team where so many things could go wrong. A smart bet might to be to back the Ravens for a profit and the Steelers to break even.

Total Games won: 11 Flat

This appears to be on the money. I will be having a little on the UNDER but its a gamble not a strong play because if everything goes right in the City of Steel they will win A LOT of games.

Baltimore Ravens

I really really really like the Ravens this year. They are one of my best long shots across the board.

This team has always been built around their defence. It certainly isn’t what it was in the glory days of Lewis, Reed and a young Suggs running amok but its still going to be strong. Tough defence is just ingrained in Baltimore and they will remain a top 10 D.

On offence I really like Flacco and feel that a team can be built around him. Flacco cops a hell of a lot of “Flac” but he already has a ring. He wont turn the ball over and he has some exciting prospects in regards to attack this year. The Ravens aren’t going to be a powerhouse offence but they sure as hell will be better than last year and only need marginal improvements on both the ground and the air to be better than average. Could be one of those teams that sneaks in with a top 10 defence and offence.

The Browns are another year away and the Bengals are gone which leaves only the Steelers. If the Steelers fall in a heap (which CAN happen) then the Ravens WILL win this division.

Draw: Huge first game against the Bengals on the road. If they can win that then they should be off to a flyer. They have plenty of travel early on but expect a big finish with the Browns, Colts and Bengals in the last three games, two of which are at home.

Win Superbowl: $31.00 (Ladbrokes)

Just great value here. Back em, pray for Steelers injury and watch their price come plummeting in.

Win Division: $3.75 (Ladbrokes)

Great bet here. In a two horse race they have a great chance and are at juicy odds.

Total Games won: Flat 9 Over $2.25

Have to be on the OVER here. Should go at least 4:2 in their division which makes the OVER here look very sexy. If you shop around you should also be able to find 8.5 which I like even more.

Cincinnati Bengals

At some point in time you have to pull the trigger. The time to pull the trigger for the Bengals was at the end of last season. This year looms as the beginning of the end for a team that has been there or abouts for the last 5 years. Both coach and QB had to be shown the door but the powers that be in Cincinnati still obviously think their window is open. I think they are wrong.

Dalton has had his chances and things are set to get even harder. Yes they still have AJ Green and he is the only real light in a world of impending darkness. The offensive line and the defence is going backwards and considering they only managed to come 3rd in this division last year that doesn’t make for happy reading or a whole lot of optimism for the impending season.

The Bengals will finish behind the Ravens and the Steelers and might battle it out against the Browns in regards to total wins and losses. The sad thing for the Bengals is that if they had pulled the trigger and started the re-build this year they might have been back in contention in a couple of years. If this year goes as bad as it could it might spell disaster for the Franchise with both the Browns and the Ravens having made hard decisions in recent years.

Draw: I think they are going to struggle come what may. Opening game hosting the Ravens will tell us a lot.

Win Superbowl: $41.00

Massive unders here. Wouldn’t touch them at double the price. I just think this team is no good.

Win Division: $4.33

Its a two horse race and the Bengal’s don’t have a start. No thank you!

Total Games won: 8.5 Under $1.82

Jump on the UNDER here looks to be one of the better Total Game bets of the season even with a favourable draw.

Cleveland Browns

Hats off the Browns. The “Holmgren inspired” nightmare of Weeden and Richardson now appears a distant memory and this is a team that is set to improve sharply. The “light” at the end of the tunnel isn’t reachable this year but it certainly could be there in 2018. The Browns were unlucky last year and should have won more games than they did. Expect them to be better in the close ones this year especially if they get lucky under centre.

Like all smart rebuilding programs they started on their defence and have worked from there. This D could be good this year. At a pinch it could be the best D in this division and if that’s the case they could push upwards of 6 or more wins.

It was a smart move not to sell the kitchen sink in search of a QB. There wasn’t one available who was worth the money they would have had to pay. The Osweiller deal was very smart and as I predicted they will keep him in the pound as a “no risk” option under centre. They have some interesting acquisitions on offence and as long as their defence improves the worst that can happen is that they go shopping at the end of the year (with a heap of picks and salary cap room) and get the best QB on offer for 2018.

Draw: Still a game by game proposition.

Win Superbowl: $201.00 (Ladbrokes)

No they cant win it this year but if you can find a bookie that will give you a price to win one in the next five let me know.

Win Division: $21.00 (Ladbrokes)

Give me a stupid price about them winning the division next season and I would be interested.

Total Games won: Flat 4 Over $1.80

I will be on the OVER here. Look things can go wrong and I don’t love this bet as we really don’t know how this offence is going to go. The OVER has a much bigger upside than the UNDER does.

Snow Angels are back Baby!”

Big jim takes a look at the NFL’s new touchdown celebration policy…read more

Roger Goddell is a top shelf sports CEO. He listens to players and fans and makes smart decisions based on what people want and what is best for the game.

The 2017 NFL season will see a relaxing of the over excessive celebration policy. This is long over due and is in keeping with the tone of modern day sport. After all proffestional sport is entertainment and this isnt test cricket.

You just know that the NFL will do this the right way. There will be limit and anything that is deemed as unsportsman like or celebration that is directed at opposition players will still incur penalties. Striking the right balance between the integrity of the sport and the theatre of the event is what every sport tries to find. Its just that the NFL does it better than the rest.

Draft done Well”

Big Jim takes a look at the implications of the 2017 NFL draft…read more

Even though the NFL has the shortest season the administration continue to make their game a “year long” feast of entertainment with events like the NFL draft. Its just another thing the NFL does better than anyone else. It’s impossible for other sports (outside of the NBA) to contend as the draft features big name kids who have already cut their teeth at the college football level. Considering college football is clearly the second biggest sport in the US the draft contains household names already.

So the big surprise was that Quarter Backs and Running Backs were the order of the day in this years draft which was the total opposite of what the experts were predicting a month ago. Three QB’s in the first 11 was a surprise. Chicago taking Mitchell Trubisky at Nb:2 I can understand (but they paid a heavy price) but I’m not convinced that Houston and KC couldn’t have strengthened up other places considering their windows appear to be open for major success come play-off time this year. Time will tell.

I think Carolina picking up Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey at pick number 8 was stealing and they didn’t have to trade up to get their man. The multi faceted running back will give Superman Cam some much needed ammunition and gives the Panthers a realistic chance of knocking off the Falcons in their division in the upcoming season. The Saints and the Bucs basically admitted that they couldn’t stop their main rivals scoring so they had better bolster their offences.

Tennessee, Philly, Pittsburgh and Buffalo all appear to have recruited well. They all filled gaps and made plays that make sense considering their position in their respective divisions. A lot of franchises gambled and bolstered their strengths rather than patching up their weaknesses. Teams like the Seahawks, Cardinals, Houston and the Chiefs will continue to be defensive powerhouses and other teams like Atlanta, New Orleans and Green Bay will continue to back themselves to outscore their opponents. I will be doing my regular breakdown of every team, every division and my best bets for the season in the upcoming months. So stay tuned.

The Brock Shock

Big Jim looks at the ground breaking trade Houston and Cleveland orchestrated to trade Brock Osweiler. Read more…..

The Houston Texans are a good football team. In fact they are better than good. Their defence is arguably the best in football. Seattle and Denver are aging in that regard and Houston will welcome back a fired up (and fit) JJ Watt next year. DeAndre Hopkins is a top 5 wide receiver, they have a creditable running game and are well coached. The problem is they don’t have a QB that stacks up and in this league that isn’t going to cut it. They gambled on a young QB in Brock Osweiler, paid him a fortune in guaranteed money and that turned into a monumental disaster for the Franchise. The kid was just no good. John Elway knew it, but Houston got sucked into a dream without doing their due diligence. In a momentary flash of biblical proportions young Brock has packed his bags and is now the Browns problems. The even more amazing thing is that the Texans didn’t have to sell their soul to achieve it.

In a stunning move that is more akin to how clubs in the NBA deal with monumental trade mistakes Houston traded Brock to Cleveland for a round 2 draft pick in 2018. That’s a 17 million dollar trade for a future draft pick! It’s expensive but there might not be a loser here and the Browns may be smarter than you may think. The popular belief is that Cleveland will move Brock on, cop the loss and use the draft pick to manoeuvre during during trade period or at draft time. There is talk about them putting in a big bid for Jimmy Garoppolo from New England but I wouldn’t be too hasty. New England are happy to hang onto Jimmy and the New England front office will make any prospective suitor bleed for his services. After all, this is an untested QB who has started a handful of games.

I think the Browns may end up using Brock as a back up or even a starter this year and then look to the future in 2018. They aren’t going to get anything significant by moving him on and it is a pipe dream that they are going to be contenders in 2017 in the tough AFC North. Why pay a QB with ability big money to get beaten up? Many are going to accuse the Browns of spending a lot of money on a future draft pick pipe dream, but having said that, they have the salary cap to make bold moves. It could be an important piece to the puzzle moving forward in years to come so lets give them credit for forward thinking especially coming off a 1:15 season last year.

What is even more interesting (as if that isn’t enough) is what Houston are going to do under centre next year. Considering their window appears to be open, a second round future pick to get Brock out the door is gold. The hard part is how are the Texans going to use there chance at redemption. On top of the list is Tony Romo. There are plenty of upsides in getting Romo. He will be hungry, relatively cheap, could only expect a two year deal and will be a huge improvement on what they have had. The downsides is that he is banged up and the Cowboys (after looking like they were going to wave him goodbye with no strings attached) no appear certain to gain more than simply having his salary covered. Romo has also struggled when it has really mattered come play-off time. A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since Romo was ear marked as one of the “non-clutch” top end QB’s in the NFL so this would be a gamble that I would be willing to take from a Texans perspective. The last (and maybe the hardest hurdle for the Texans to get over) is that other suitors like the Broncos may be equally appealing to both Romo and the Cowboys. That means the price goes dramatically up as every player and every franchise is out there looking for the best deal for themselves.

If they don’t get Romo then the Texans are faced with plan B, and Plan B doesn’t look clear cut by any means. They could stick with Tom Savage who showed some ability last year when called up to take over from Osweiler. He appears an excellent back up for the Texans but he would really have to step up to resemble a play-off winning calibre QB. If Savage was to start and had a reasonable season (but not a stand out one) the Texans would find themselves in the same position Washington has been in with Cousins which threatens to derail the Redskins. So do you trade up in the draft and try and take the best available rookie kid coming out of college. This would take a lot of courage from an organisation already with egg splattered all over their faces. The other option is to shop around and try and find the next Rogers, Brady or Prescott late in the draft and go in with Savage and the new kid fighting for first week honours. Good luck on that front, if it was that simple everyone would be doing it.

Their last option is actually one that I like. If I was the Texans I would look to Jay Cutler (if the Romo deal is unworkable). Cutler is a sook and can be a cancer in the locker room, obviously not the ideal situation but we are talking Plan B here. What old “Cuttlefish” does offer, is a ton of ability even if he is on the wrong side of 30. His arm is top shelf and that is what Hopkins desperately needs. He would be cheap and would be amenable to a one year deal. If he doesn’t work out…send him packing!!! That way you aren’t locked into any expensive long term deal and you can go searching next year with minimal damage. This seems like a smarter option than gambling on someone like Jimmy Garropollo who is going to cost and is still untested. Jay would have plenty of dollars in the bank and his agents best selling point is that he would be just as happy to sit back and go pig hunting and swill tins of Budweiser. The Texans would be a sexy option for Cutler as it would offer him one final chance of redemption for his years of under achievement.

What ever happens its been an amazing trade which has turned this years free agency and upcoming draft on its head.

Big Jim had an amazing record last year hitting two winners for every one loser on handicap/line bets on his three star specials. Tune in for the best NFL mail at bigjimwins.com next NFL season!!!
